Young racer Giordano had high hopes for the next instalment of Wingfield Motors’-sponsored Power Series, which took place on Saturday, 10 August 2019 at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town. He has had an extremely successful racing season so far, despite tough competitors and a crash that took his Golf out of the running earlier this year. Unfortunately, the young Capetonian student saw another crash over the weekend – and this one put his Golf on its roof!
Giordano has been leading Class C from race one this season and has been setting lap records and taking pole position ever since. This weekend was no different: in the first race, Giordano took full points for pole position, set fastest lap of the day and a new lap record, and secured a win, despite competitor Kyle Wiltshire giving him a run for his money. The second race, however, took Giordano out of the running – getting stuck behind a Class B car, Giordano had tried to move out of the rut just as the racers approached Turn 5. Disaster struck: “So when I got to Turn 5, my foot went to the floor… I had no brakes and I was a passenger at 180km/h! … I just closed my eyes and assumed the brace position.” Thankfully, once the car came to a stop atop the tyre wall, Giordano was unharmed. The go-go Golf will be on ice for a while, and has seen better days…
