SA Oil Celebrating Heritage Day 2019

Firing Up Our Team Spirit

Before we fueled up with juicy burgers, though, we lined up for a game of ‘pro pong’ – an all-SA Oil version of beer pong! Brushing up on our company knowledge and pong skillz helped us stand a chance to snag the monthly prize – and score some points towards that end-of-year Secret Grand Prize!

Pro Pong? Bring it On!

‘Pro Pong’ is an SA Oil spin on the popular pub game in which players toss a ping pong ball across a table with the aim of landing it in the cup on the other end. The game comprises three opposing teams of two players with three cups set up in a triangle format on each side of the table.

Team Shooting

The teams were Suits (the Accounts people), Mad Men (the marketing peeps) and Transporters (the logistics guys). In the team round, each of our three teams took on each other in a Round Robin format:

The rules were as follows:

  1. Each team has a turn, both players shooting once
  2. If the ball goes in a cup on the full, that cup is removed – the attacking team scores two points and the defending team needs to answer a question about our company, brand or products:
    1. If they answer correctly, they score one point
    2. If they answer incorrectly, zero points.
  3. If the attacking team knocks over a cup, they need to answer a question:
    1. If they answer correctly, they score one point
    2. If they answer incorrectly, zero points
  4. Team with the most points after the three-round Round Robin wins!
  5. If there’s a tie between teams – first team to answer a tiebreaker question(s) wins!

At the end of the team round, Transporters were the easy winners.

Individual Shooting

In this round, the two team players from the winning team – Transporters – went head-to-head in a sudden death. The rules as follows:

  1. Each player shoots once
  2. If the ball goes in the cup on the full, that cup is removed – the attacking plater scores two points and the defending plater needs to answer a question:
    1. If they answer correctly, they score one point
    2. If they answer incorrectly, zero points.
  3. If the attacking player knocks over a cup, they need to answer a question:
    1. If they answer correctly, they score one point
    2. If they answer incorrectly, zero points
  4. Player with the most points after the head-to-head wins!
  5. If there’s a tie between players – first team to answer a tiebreaker question(s) wins!

What’s Cooking on the Braai?

Winner decided, it was time to check up on a few mails – or, more correctly, the opening match in the rugby world cup which was playing on the boardroom’s big screen – before heading outside to enjoy our traditional skottel burger braai…

The Team that Eats Together Stays Together!

In a regular day, when the deadlines are looming and the pressure’s on, there can be precious little time for bonding with colleagues, even though science says socialised unit perform better on the job. According to happiness speaker and author Alexander Kjerulf, socialising with work mates can help communication, build trust and foster collaboration. Making some time to get together to prepare and then munch our way through some delicious food under the hot African sun certainly had us interacting in the true spirit of the South African braai! Note to us: Socialise more!
